The Civil Society Observatory on Methane

The European Civil Society Observatory on Methane (CSO-M) is an independent platform designed to empower civil society to drive down methane emissions from fossil fuels. By integrating science, policy and economics, it strengthens the role of NGOs in holding policymakers and industry accountable for achieving their climate commitments.

The CSO-M and the Time for CH₄nge campaign are distinct yet deeply interlinked efforts. While the campaign is designed to raise public awareness, the observatory focuses on building a network of civil society organisations active in reducing methane emissions.

The two initiatives complement each other: the campaign fosters public awareness so that the actions of Observatory members can take root effectively. They ultimately work together to address the methane crisis through both data-driven and action-oriented approaches.

Uses methane data (e.g. MethaneSAT, UNEP’s IMEO) for evidence-based engagement;
Raises public awareness of methane emissions and their climate impact through targeted campaigns and community engagement.

Enhances visibility, awareness, policy implementation and ambition

Aims for at least a 75% reduction in methane emissions from fossil fuel production by 2030

The CSO-M secretariat is co-hosted by Environmental Defense Fund Europe and Deutsche Umwelthilfe.
